Chapter Twenty-four

June 6, 1942—Ravensbrück

Landry had been transported with six other prisoners from Neubrandenburg in the back of an army truck. She’d managed a whispered conversation with a British woman called Adelita, who’d told her she was suspected of being a Special Operations Executive. Landry knew better than to ask her to confirm their suspicion, particularly with the two male guards itching to pounce on any crumb of information they might be able to take back to Major Oster.

As soon as they were pulled off the truck and into the camp square, a female guard singled out Adelita, and Landry saw Griffin, disturbingly striking in his SS uniform, march toward them. She quickly scanned for Delaney and Simson, but they found her with Simson appearing beside her silently. She said nothing, but Landry followed the line of her gaze to see Delaney standing next to the woman she recognized as Ilsa Blumstein. It looked like their part of the mission was proceeding as planned.

“Adelita Lake, meet Erika Vogt.”

Griffin’s perfect German accent was impressive. Four years of going native had improved it immensely. He blended in perfectly.

Vogt thrust the handle of her whip into Adelita’s stomach. She doubled over, and Vogt struck her across the back, knocking Adelita to her knees in the mud. She tossed a piece of chocolate onto the ground.

“Like a dog, scum.”

Landry stepped forward, but Simson pushed her forearm across her chest, blocking her path. “Stay put or you’ll end up in the ovens. There’s no place for your heroics here.”

Landry unfurled her clenched fists and went to turn away. If she couldn’t help, she wasn’t going to give Vogt the satisfaction of an audience.

Simson stopped her again and whispered quietly, “I told you, stay exactly where you are. There’s no version of this that ends well for you if you do anything other than stay put.”

The guard placed her boot on Adelita’s back and pushed her toward the candy. Adelita reached to retrieve it, but the guard kicked her hand away. “Like a dog.”

Landry clenched her teeth, knowing exactly what the guard wanted Adelita to do. Adelita looked to Landry, her eyes wet with tears and shame. She turned back to the chocolate and picked it up with her mouth.

“Filthy Juden-lover.” Vogt laughed and motioned for Griffin to help her up.

Adelita stood, and Landry hoped her little show had convinced Vogt she was no threat, let alone a spy.

“Why are you in my country?”

Adelita looked puzzled, and Vogt backhanded her. She fell against Griffin, and he held her in place with his hands wrapped around her upper arms.

“Why are you in my country?” Vogt repeated.

“I do not understand,” Adelita said quietly, in a perfect Berliner accent. “I was born here.”

Vogt snarled, and Landry could see she was a barely controlled dog herself. She slapped Adelita three times, and Griffin’s grip stopped her from falling to the floor with the force of the blows.

Landry moved against Simson’s arm, intent on intervening, but Simson shook her head.

“She’s not the mission.
